I am director, corporate counsel at Starbucks Coffee Company. As in-house counsel, I litigate, prosecute and license Starbucks trademark, patent, copyright and domain name rights throughout the world. In addition, as Lead Attorney-India, I manage all legal work, including, for example, commercial and corporate governance matters, on behalf of Starbucks Corporation, the parent entity. My position at Starbucks and my life are the culmination of a non-traditional upbringing and exposure to various cultures. Being raised by my grandparents in India while my parents studied abroad to create a better life for us, I learned both the value of family and self sufficiency. Moreover, briefly staying in Iran and England, and later moving to the United States, instilled a deep need to understand and appreciate cultural and individual differences. Finally, through example and conversation, my grandparents and parents taught me the value of hard work and persistence. As a result, I have become an experienced IP attorney with a demonstrated ability to work hard and appreciate every experience. Working as a clerk, docket clerk, and paralegal while attending law school, I not only developed a strong foundation in IP and licensing law but also an appreciation for all legal functions. Additionally, prosecuting and litigating patent, trademark and copyright matters as well as drafting agreements and conducting IP due diligence as an associate at Holland & Knight LLP and Schiff Hardin LLP helped further develop my skills, which I continue to refine at Starbucks .
