LaToya Merritt is a partner with Phelps Dunbar, LLP where she serves as the deputy practice coordinator for the Jackson, MS office's labor and employment group. In her practice, LaToya focuses on Civil Rights and Title VII defense, representing private and public employers throughout the Southeast in all facets of employment related matters. She is a first chair litigator in both jury and bench trials and has sucessfully tried numerous cases to verdict.
While LaToya is a litigator at heart, an important part of her practice involves training, planning, and employmet advice. Specifcially, she provides management and/or corporate counsel advice regarding performance evaluation/appraisal systems; development of employee policies and . She also provides extensive training to clients regarding managing diverse workforces and handling harassment and discrimiantion investigations. She conducts diversity training and educational programs for numerous companies throughout the region. She has trained hundreds of managers on employment related issues.
Nationally, LaToya was recently recognized by the Defense Research Institute ("DRI) as an "Emerging Leader." LaToya was as an inaugural member of the National Bar Association's Nation's Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40 class in 2010. In 2012, she was selected as one of the 50 Leading Business Women in Mississippi. LaToya is a past president of the MS Women Lawyers Association (2005-2006) and former chair of the MS Bar Association's Diversity in the Law Committee. Currently, LaToya serves as a member of the Lawyers in Transition Committee.
She is a magna cum laude graduate of of Grambling State University and she received her J.D., cum laude, from North Carolina Central University School of Law. After law school, she clerked for the Honorable William J. Haynes, Jr., of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.
