Vice President and General Counsel, Cummins Inc.

Sharon Barner joined Cummins in 2012 after serving as Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Deputy Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She has also been named one of the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America.

Under Sharon’s leadership, the Cummins legal department has grown its percentage of women and minorities from less than 50 to 67. Based on law firm diversity data, half of Cummins’ outside counsel hours are now handled by diverse lawyers.

“As a law firm, you can decide whether you want to help me focus on diversity as one of my issues or not,” Sharon said in an interview. “As I ask them to partner with me, I am also partnering with them on their diversity initiatives.”
