Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Hospitals

From 1998 until his promotion to General Counsel in 2010, Mark Zemelman managed a group of lawyers providing legal support for the corporate and business operations of Kaiser Permanente. He also has a longstanding commitment to diversity in the legal profession. With his guidance, the Legal Department at Kaiser Permanente has greatly increased the use of women- and minority-owned law firms, as well as developed internal programs that are resulting in increased diversity and inclusion within the department.

Mark has been an active member of the Board of Directors of the California Minority Counsel Program for many years and is frequently invited to speak and brainstorm with industry leaders about further diversifying the legal profession.

As part of LCLD's Leaders at the Front initiative, Mark created a Leader's Pledge detailing his personal and organizational commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Read Mark's pledge here

As a company, Kaiser Permanente is committed to addressing the diversity challenges facing the healthcare community. Its culturally responsive care plan includes providing care in multiple languages, educating care team members about racial and gender biases, and closing care gaps for underserved populations. In 2018, Kaiser Permanente received the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ inaugural Health Equity Award for its commitment to reducing and eliminating disparities in health care quality and access to care.

Kaiser Permanente was named an LCLD Top Performer in 2021.
