At the 2011 Annual Meeting, LCLD Members considered a series of BUILD Activity cards — key concepts and probing questions about diversity. When discussing the issue or spreading the word about LCLD, you may find these to be useful tools.

At the meeting, Members also received a copy of LCLD TrendLines, a summary of recent survey data related to diversity in the legal profession.

2011 Annual Meeting: Highlights

Leaders from more than 100 LCLD member organizations gathered at the Mandarin-Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C., Sept. 14-16 for spirited discussions, panels, and presentations, all centered around the 2011-2012 theme: "BUILD."

Speakers included Newark Mayor Cory Booker who challenged listeners to follow the advice of an ambitious teenage athlete he met who had said to aim high and "get to the roof!" No less inspiring were the words of former Procter & Gamble Chair John Pepper who revealed that the most exciting aspect of his decades of experience at that admired corporation was the growth in diversity of its people. A dramatic 18-foot high structure incorporating the thoughts (on cards) of LCLD members was unveiled at an evening reception, where members also saw artwork from a range of Latin American countries, presented by Artists of the Americas.

As noted by the publication, Legal Times, the 2011 meeting aimed to "nurture and grow a diverse legal network." The article quoted Talent Development Chair Greg Jordan, Managing Partner of Reed Smith: "This is both a long-term initiative and a now initiative," he said.  Added Vice Chair Geoff Kelly, GC of Coca-Cola: "When you get a lot of high-talented and high-potential people together, there is no limit to what you can achieve."
