Register to Be a Mentor

The LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program is preparing for its fourth year of reaching diverse 1L law students around the country through the Individual Mentoring Program (IMP). In 2013, we helped more than 850 law students through the IMP, thanks to amazing Mentors from LCLD Member organizations.

Registration for Mentors for the upcoming academic year will begin June 1, 2014.

Attorneys may register here for this opportunity. You will be matched with a 1L student beginning in October 2014. Please share this opportunity with attorneys at LCLD Member organizations, as we have programs in more than 30 cities. If you have any questions, please contact Louise Bald.

Open Letter to 1Ls - Guest Column

Dear 1L,

I am not sure if you have heard - the legal job market is still tough for law school graduates. The good news is that this should be old news to you now. As a newly minted law student, you entered the doors of your distinguished institution fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead. This is great because knowledge is power. The bad news is that there is no immediate end in sight. The American Bar Association has recently reported that unemployment among law school graduates has climbed steadily in recent years, even as the overall jobless rate has declined. Nine months after earning law degrees, the unemployment rate of the class of 2013 was 11.2 percent, up from 10.6 percent for the class of 2012, and 9.2 percent for 2011 law school graduates.

However, there is still light at the end of the tunnel because there is still a potentially big payoff for earning a law degree, as many large and medium sized firms pay first-year associates $100,000 per year or more. The catch, however, is that there are simply fewer of those jobs around.

So, needless to say, it is more important than ever that during your 1L year you are aware of what resources are available and how to strategically utilize them to meet your future goals. The most obvious place to start is your Career Services Office (CSO), where talented individuals are paid to help you navigate the legal job market. However, despite this formal role of your CSO, "many students and alumni are not aware of how to best utilize the resource provided by their school." And to be honest, many law school CSO's do not do the best job of marketing the services they have to offer. This oversight on both sides can be critical, for the relationships you make with the individuals in your CSO can be essential to your job search success.

So where should you start? Below are five ways to utilize your CSO and maximize its resources:

  1. Individual Initiative.
  2. Alumni Connections.
  3. Networking Events.
  4. Fellowship/Internship Programs.
  5. Mentor/Mentee Programs.

Group Mentoring Program (GMP) Photo Submission Contest - March & April Winners

Congratulations to Bonnie Pen, Hunton & Williams LLP, and Andrea Ren, American University, the winners of the photo submission contest for March and April!

The photo submission contest is for those attending GMP events this spring. The contest will run from February 1st through June 30th, with one winner selected monthly. Announced in the Connections newsletter, winners will receive a $50 gift card to Starbucks. To submit your photo(s) from a GMP event, please email to Louise Bald.

2014 City Lead Trainings a Success

LCLD Member law firms Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP and Kirkland & Ellis LLP graciously hosted the 2014 City Lead Trainings at their Chicago, IL and San Francisco, CA offices, respectively, this spring. Attorneys from LCLD organizations who volunteer as City Leads for the Success in Law School Mentoring Program during the 2014-2015 academic year met to discuss and plan for the year ahead. Chris De Santis, Specialist in Management and Organization Development, spoke to the groups on the topic of A Skeptic's Guide to Mentoring.

Also part of the event, a panel of law school professionals spoke about resources available to Mentors and Mentees. Panelists included Shannon Bartlett, Director of Diversity Education & Outreach, Northwestern University School of Law; Bill Chamberlain, Dean of Law Career Services, DePaul University College of Law; Michelle Mohr Vodenik, Director, Career Services & Public Interest/ Diversity, Chicago-Kent College of Law Illinois Institute of Technology; Susanne Aronowitz, Associate Dean for Law Career Services, Golden Gate University School of Law; and Terrence Galligan, Assistant Dean, Career Development, University of California - Berkeley School of Law.

LCLD extends a special thanks to all those at Katten and Kirkland who worked hard to make the event such a success!
