Sergio counsels corporate clients in a variety of industries on coverage under insurance policies, including cyber insurance for data breaches, cyber liabilities and other emerging risks; commercial general liability (GL); directors and officers (D&O); errors and omissions (E&O); property and casualty; business interruption; employment practices liability (EPLI); excess and umbrella insurance, and other commercial insurance and reinsurance contracts. As part of his client service, he advises corporations on risk transfer strategies aligned with clients’ strategic and business objectives. To help clients maximize insurance recoveries in the face of intransigent insurers, Sergio frequently represents clients in insurance coverage litigation and arbitration often seeking additional recoveries for insurers' bad faith. His experience includes insurance coverage matters cumulatively exceeding well over one billion dollars in losses or exposures. Sergio routinely authors articles and speaks on panels on insurance coverage for complex claims from the corporate policyholder's perspective.
A strong advocate of public service, Sergio has served on the Board of Directors of the Hispanic Bar Association of DC and serves as co-chair of its Endorsements Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors of The George Washington University Law School’s Alumni Association and Latino Law Alumni Association. He sits on the Board of Advisors for the Esperanza Education Fund, a community-financed college scholarship program.
