Richard joined DLA PIPER in January 2006, working out of its Philadelphia Office in the Patent Prosecution Subgroup. Richard is admitted to practice before the United States Patent Office, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and in various federal courts. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Richard earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1994, focusing on industrial systems, mathematics, computer systems and programming. In 2002, he earned his Juris Doctorate from Widener University School of Law, where he served as a member of its Moot Court Honor Society and Trial Advocacy Honor Society.
Richard's legal practice spans all areas of Intellectual Property law, including patent, trademark and copyright procurement, enforcement and infringement defense, general counseling, licensing, litigation support, merger and acquisition diligence, technology evaluation and counseling, and developing intellectual property / business strategies.
Aside from his legal practice, has been a member of his firm's Diversity Committee since 2007, where he regularly meets with other members to discuss and address issues affecting the recruitment, retention and promotion of diverse lawyers and staff. Richard has also been instrumental in securing sponsorship and advertising opportunities for DLA PIPER, which ultimately resulted in awarding scholarships to Hispanic law studends while at the same time advancing his firm' commitment to diversity in the legal profession. In 2015, Richard was appointed to chair his office's diversity committee.
Richard is also a member of his firm's Hispanic/Latino affinity group, which includes associates and partners from across the firm’s U.S. offices. As a member, Richard contributes to topics such as expanding the firm’s reach into Spanish-speaking Latin American countries, advancement and retention of Hispanic attorneys within the firm, networking initiatives to uncover cross-selling opportunities, and other related issues.
