Alaina King Benford is a trial-tested litigation partner in the Houston office of Norton Rose Fulbright LLP where she maintains a diverse litigation practice. Alaina joined the firm (then known as Fulbright & Jaworski LLP) in 2000 after a summer clerkship. She is the second (of three) African American women elected to partner in the firm’s nearly 100 year history. As lead counsel, she has tried cases to jury verdict in state and federal courts and has represented clients in multi-party arbitration and litigation disputes involving breach of contract, bad faith claims, fraud, real estate and land use disputes, eminent domain and condemnation, wrongful death claims and energy-related catastrophic personal injury claims.
Alaina is a fellow of Litigation Counsel of America, an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society with membership limited to 3,500 fellows, representing less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers. A graduate of the American Board of Trial Advocates National Trial Academy, she serves as faculty for her firm’s annual trial training program for all first year litigation attorneys. Alaina was a member of the Houston office’s Recruiting Committee as an associate and later served as the Houston office’s Hiring Partner responsible for all attorney employment.
Alaina is committed to the arts and education and currently serves on the board of directors of MATCH (the Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston), The RISE School, and as the President of the Board of Directors of The Ensemble Theatre, the oldest and largest African American theater coompany in the Southwest. She founded the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church Legal Ministry, which helps elderly church members create basic wills during an annual will-a-thon.
Alaina graduated from Thurgood Marshall School of Law, magna cum laude, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Thurgood Marshall Law Review. She has received the following professional honors: Rising Star (Texas SuperLawyers), Houston’s Top Lawyers (H Texas Magazine), Houston’s Most Influential Lawyers (Women Looking Ahead Magazine) and Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2015 (Houston Woman Magazine). Alaina grew up in Sacramento, California and she enjoys skiing in nearby Lake Tahoe and Sierra Nevada. Her weekends are filled with the activities of her two boys, date nights with her husband and ball tosses to her beloved Jack Russell Terrier. She eschews phrases like "work life balance" and instead strives to be present in the moment.
